Non-Toxic, Gentle, and Medicine-Free Remedies for Your Dog’s Itchy Skin

Dealing with itchy skin is one of the most stressful and common experiences to have when raising a pet. Itchy skin can take multiple visits to the vet, trial-and-error, and furious Google searching before you find a cause! Meanwhile, you have to watch as your poor pooch scratches and struggles. We’ve been there, too. When our rescue dog, Bazzy, came down with a bad case of itchy and uncomfortable skin due to allergies, we knew we had to start thinking outside the box. That’s why we created Bazzy’s Kefir.

Dogs are not unlike their humans in the possible causes of itchy skin. Common reasons include environmental factors like allergies or sensitivities. If your pup begins to exhibit other symptoms such as weight loss or changes in mood, you should consult your veterinarian immediately. However, we’re here to put some of your worrisome-induced fears to rest - most cases of itchy skin aren’t usually a sign of something more serious! Mild dry skin accompanied with occasional itching is actually pretty common and easy to treat.

The problem is, many commercial products involve harsh toxins or medications that can do more harm than good! We don’t need to tell you that harsh or synthetic chemicals can exacerbate the problem.

Our mission at Bazzy’s Kefir is to bring you all-natural and safe alternatives for your pet so that he or she can experience all the joys that life has to offer. For pets with dry, itchy skin or mild, occasional scratching, try these safe and all-natural remedies to avoid even more harmful toxins. But remember, you should always consult your vet before switching up your pup’s food or skincare regimen!

Oatmeal Baths/Shampoo

Have you considered colloidal oatmeal baths for your pup? After all, he deserves to be pampered, too! Colloidal oatmeal baths soothe by relieving inflammation and washing away potential allergens stuck to your dog’s fur. We love this option because oatmeal is natural, so it’s no problem if your pooch ingests some in his bath!

There are a plethora of options on the market for dog-safe oatmeal shampoos, but we love Colloidal Oatmeal Dog Shampoo with Pure Lavender! Not only is Colloidal Oatmeal Dog Shampoo infused with calming and all-natural ingredients like jojoba and lavender, but it’s also recommended by veterinarians!

For the DIY crowd, it’s quite simple to create your own colloidal oatmeal bath for your dog. Using a blender, crush 1 cup of whole oat oatmeal into a fine powder (make sure you have unflavored and unsweetened oatmeal!), then mix with water at a comfortable temperature for your pup’s bath. Your dog will love his self-care day!

Baking Soda

Baking soda can be a real miracle worker when it comes to a wide variety of day-to-day issues. People tend to use baking soda for cleaning and cooking, but haven’t realized it can be a helpful tool for pet care, too!

Try making a skin salve with baking soda to apply directly to your dog’s skin. First, combine 50 parts water with 50 parts baking soda to create a thick paste. Then, apply directly to your dog’s itchiest spots and let sit for 20 minutes. (This might involve engaging your pup to distract him from licking it all off, but it’s worth it!) After 20 minutes, simply rinse off.

Baking soda is known to do it all, from drying out painful rashes to providing soothing relief to itch and inflammation. You can also put baking soda in his or her oatmeal bath for a protective boost!

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera works for dogs the same way it does for sunburns in humans. Just imagine how relieved your pup will be, getting a good aloe vera treatment to his red and singing skin! Just be sure to get an aloe vera gel that has NO alcohol—you don’t want to burn your poor pup any more than he already is, especially if he has managed to break the skin with itching! Instead, look for aloe vera gels that are 100% natural.

Or better yet, get crafty if you have a green thumb! Look up different ways to make DIY aloe vera gel straight from the source: an aloe vera house plant. You will have a remedy in less than 20 minutes, guaranteed to soothe with zero added chemicals that are harmful to your pet.

Balanced Diet

Itchy skin due to food allergies can be tricky. How can you pinpoint the culprit when almost everything you’ll find includes wheat, chicken, dairy, beef, or eggs? For starters, limited ingredient dog foods can help get to the root cause of your dog’s skin allergy. We recommend a diet that has plenty of omega-3 fatty acids and healthy carbs, like sweet potato. These key ingredients will improve your dog’s digestion and are guaranteed to promote healthy skin.

Wellness Simple Limited Ingredient Diet Turkey and Potato is a great option when looking for limited ingredient dog food. Wellness Simple will give your dog grain-free meals with real meat derivatives so that he will not only love the taste but get all the wholesome nutrients he needs.

For allergies and itchy skin, a raw food diet can be a game-changer. Raw food is easier for your dog to digest and works to support his immune system. However, going completely raw can be a difficult process. Start by soaking your dog’s kibble in organic bone broth, or start by adding in fresh food to his current diet. You can add cooked meat and dog-safe fresh vegetables like steamed and unseasoned green beans and carrots—trust us, your dog will thank you! Once you’re ready to take it further, we suggest doing more research from a specialist or expert to make sure your dog gets all the vital nutrients and minerals he needs!

Probiotics

We at Bazzy’s Kefir love probiotics because it’s a reliable (& fun) treatment to many different conditions in dogs. Most medications will only provide temporary relief to long-term issues, whereas something like probiotics gets to the heart of the matter: the gastrointestinal system. Did you know that almost 70% of a dog’s immune system is centralized in his GI tract? Probiotics help restore balance to bacteria levels, providing relief that’s gentle but effective, without the synthetic ingredients you’ll find in other over-the-counter solutions.

For a simple powder-based probiotic supplement, we recommend Animal Essentials Plant Enzyme and Probiotics. Animal Essentials is the perfect supplement to your dog’s diet: plant enzymes help with your dog’s digestion, absorb all the nutrients he needs, and helps him eliminate those yucky toxins. Human grade and sourced from sustainable products, Animal Essentials will give you the peace of mind that your dog’s diet stays pure.

We at Bazzy’s Kefir obviously consider Kefir to be the best-kept secret in probiotics, packed with even more nutrients, healthy bacteria, and yeast. Try Bazzy's Blueberry Peanut Butter Frozen Kefir Treats to decrease your pup’s inflammation and restore balance to his troubling allergy and asthma issues. All of Bazzy’s Kefir products are dairy-free, too, because we know that dairy is another common allergen for dogs. The health benefits of Kefir are endless, making your dependency on expensive but harmful store-bought products a thing of the past!

We at Bazzy’s Kefir know from experience how painful it is to watch your dog suffer from mysterious symptoms like dry, itchy skin. As pet parents, we’ll try anything that might give our cherished companions some relief! At Bazzy’s Kefir, pet health is our passion because we know that a healthy pet means a happy family.
